Feast of the Meeting of the Rose in Pallerols
José Antonio García-Prieto Segura, priest of Opus Dei, who spent many years in Rome with Saint Josemaría Escrivá de Balaguer recalls some stories by the founder of Opus Dei about his time in Pallerols and the meeting of the Rose in the church of Pallerols. He says like this:

On November 20, the Feast of the Encounter of the Rose was held in Pallerols. Since 2003, many people have celebrated it on the weekend closest to November 22, a date that, as is known, Saint Josemaría found the
rosa de Rialp
in 1937, when he was on his way to Andorra.
For readers who are unaware of the circumstances of the discovery, I transcribe it as stated in the recent book
"Historia del Opus Dei"
:
"On November 21, they slept in premises attached to a looted church (…) That night, Escrivá suffered great anxiety because he believed that God's will was for him to remain in the Republican zone (…). The next morning, moved by uncertainty and against his usual behavior, he requested a sign from Heaven; specifically, he thought "of a flower or wooden ornament from the missing altarpieces." He went back into the church and, on the ground, in a place where he had already passed the previous day, he found a stewed wooden rose. He was overjoyed because he understood that God was telling him to keep going ".
Just a month later, being already in Pamplona, he left a written record of what happened, and of his deep feelings before that grace from Heaven, which he always considered received through the Virgin Mary. His account, dated December 22, 1937, ended like this: "I was very happy and blessed God, who gave me that comfort when I was full of concern about whether or not Jesus would be happy with me (Vázquez de Prada, V. , The Founder of Opus Dei II, p. 196).
Nothing to add to the historical fact, but having shared with Saint Josemaría -on three occasions- his evocation of the event, has prompted me to write these lines. He would like to convey the echo left in me by his references to that gift from Heaven, without distorting his thoughts or the reasons that prompted him to tell us about it.

The first occasion was in December 1961, in Rome, in a time of coexistence with his children who lived there, next to the headquarters where he lived. And the second, in February 1964. Among the impressions of those moments, I highlight his deep joy - shared with us - at remembering that divine gift and a lively gratitude to the Lord for having treated his little son as a father. he. He wanted to overlook anything that might sound extraordinary about him. For this reason, the first time he spoke to us about this, he ended with these words: "It was a gift from the Virgin, through whom all good things come to us (...) But I no longer remember that event: I only have memory to thank the Lord for his mercy with the Work and with me "(Vázquez de Prada, V. o cp 195)
The third occasion, also in 1964, was with surprise: each of us who were with Saint Josemaría at that time, was able to hold the Rose in their hands. It happened like this: the Founder wanted someone who had been in the Work for many years and had never been to Rome, to spend a few days there. We familiarly called him Chusti. We were with Saint Josemaría and, unexpectedly, addressing him, he said: Chusti, my son, have you seen the Rialp rose? Faced with his negative response, the Father asked Ernesto, present there, to bring her. The rose was passed from hand to hand. I don't remember Saint Josemaría making any comment on that occasion; but silent, his smiling face said it all, seeing how the gift of the Virgin was passing through our hands.
A final comment seems necessary to me because, reasonably, some reader will say: all that well, but what can I get out of such an experience that I will never have and that, furthermore, does not concern me personally? This can certainly be the case, but it should be noted that every believer, if he lives by faith, knows that he is preceded by a personal history -as a singular child of God-, and also a communal one, as a member of the Church. And for these two aspects he has received goods from Heaven: small and ordinary "roses" that are hardly seen and so many times we recognize coming from above, when faced with the positive result of efforts and things that overwhelmed us and have come forward, we say with joy: "Thank God!" It would be like a tiny little version of the Rialp event. And as a member of the Church, each and every one of us has received the "supreme Gift": the God-man, Christ Jesus, because "God so loved the world that he gave his Only Begotten Son (Jn 3:16 ). By faith, we know that the hand of God is always present.
In short: the believer does not live "from memories", without more, but from seeing the footprint of God and thanking a thousand times the divine step in his own life.
Finally, José Antonio García-Prieto expands the news with three links related to the subject of the Rose of Pallerols. They are as follows:

En los Pirineos: o todos o ningunoSan Josemaría; Paso de los Pirineos

Note.- Although the expedition members of 1937 always speak of the Rose of Rialp, in fact today the place where Saint Josemaría found the rose is Pallerols de Rialb. Rialp is a town that is in the Pallars Sobirà region and should not be confused with the Baronia de Rialb, in the Noguera region.
